10/01/2020. subject. button for link on "Ask and given page" on help menu. ##### Suggest button for link on "Ask and given page" / window on tcl wiki masthead, under the help section. Let me suggest a permanent link to Ask13 or Ask system under the help window on TCL Wiki masthead. The Ask13 pages were a very popular feature of the older wiki format. And newcomers like me learned a lot from either reading the answers of the veteran programmers or attempting to answer the Ask questions for themselves. From other TCL forums and venues, I believe a button or write in for user questions would pull in some new members. ########## Also,, as one looking to the future of TCl/TK, the subject areas of the questions were interesting to me in how current users were attempting to use TCL. A note in the account of Don Libes on the history of TCL/Expect indicates that Libes was almost shocked by the headwind of users behind TCL/Expect in the early years. I know that the older members are aware of the Ask System, and very old hat to some engineer, but it occurs to me that some newer members might not find it easily . #### Also, suggest the "How did you learn of TCL" , page be highlighted or emphasized. I added some new content to that page, but no obvious followup. Not to sound discouraging, but I am getting a ton of blank stares, when I mention TCL. ### Best Wishes https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/Ask%2C+and+it+shall+be+given+%23+13#147f938cabf6cb937127a5d49d68663b1b6a377ae6e5fe683c040fae6bb6db24 https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/How+did+you+discover+TCL%2FTK Background. About 1996, the Personal Computer PC on my desk, was replaced by a Sun Sparc 20 workstation. I was an engineer and mainly programming in Fortran 77. I had learned QuickBasic, Html, Perl (Unix), and also Javascript. Since the Sparc 20 interface was command line Unix, I looked around for a gui or gui language as an interface to the Sparc 20 workstation. I found Tool Control Language TCL fairly easy to mouse click and invoke executable icons on the Xwindows screen. I even had a gimpy trashcan icon on the screen. I showed my beginner TCL program to a co_worker and he said I had fairly imitated the the PC Windows icon system on a Sparc20 workstation. But this was only about 200 lines of beginner TCL code and fast as greased lightning on a Sparc20! How's that for a sales job on TCL? Then, I wrote small slot calculators in TCL and Javascript on the Sparc20 behind a firewall, which were similar to my later pages on this wiki. Never forget the human brain evolved to hunt rabbits, not Unix critters and command lines. Your eyes and brain modeling/mapping of the outside stims are closer to a gui screen than one might think. ############################################## ################################################ ############################################### In fact, you have other members trying to reinvent a questions page, like "ask and be given" Questions that that have been moved around recently, https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/Questions+that+that+have+been+moved+around+recently+during+the+%22big+November+shuffle%22 anonymous added on 2026-09-05 14:40:26: 9/5/2026. Thanks for feedback and your previous help on my code projects under TCLLIB. My best suggestion for the Wiki is to install a button on help menu on the Masthead (Help) for the Ask page system. Ask, and it shall be given # 13 In the past, I have used some of the Ask content to start Wiki pages, where the questions or the answers!!! seemed useful. And yes, I know that the veteran members know all about this page, but the newcomers and beginners may not. Filled out a Wiki ticket for this. Thanks, again. | ||||
